Detroit, Michigan

The Ronald McDonald House of Detroit is a non-profit organization whose primary function is to provide low-cost, temporary housing for families of children receiving medical care in the Detroit Medical Center. To meet the growing demand for more accommodations, the RMH responded by providing four new barrier free sleeping rooms with baths and two sleeping rooms with a shared bath.

Attempting to address family needs, D/MA incorporated two common living areas, a new exercise room and an updated kitchen decor. Also within the new addition are six storage areas, a conference room, executive director's office and an additional administrative office.

In reorganizing the main entrance, D/MA was able to enlarge the front administrative office while creating a more visible front entry. Along with the expansion came the need to bring the building into compliance with existing codes including ADA and Michigan Barrier Free. The addition of a barrier free toilet/ shower facility, new exterior approach ramps and an elevator serving both floors have all helped to make the Ronald McDonald House of Detroit accessible to all guests.
Kitchen Renovation
Ronald McDonald House of Detroit

Detroit, Michigan

The original kitchen at the Ronald McDonald House of Detroit was in need of a re-design as well as updated finishes and appliances.  Dorchen/Martin Associates was called upon to develop a more efficient working floor plan and, with the assistance of interior designer & RMHD Board Member Diane Fishman, ASID, renovate the entire space.  Generous donations, including appliances, materials and labor, came from a variety of “House” supporters.

Plenty of warm, incandescent lights were used to illuminate shiny & colorful surfaces such as stainless-steel counters and decorative ceramic wall tile.  These finishes help to brighten the kitchen and comfort the resident-guests during a challenging time in their lives at this “kitchen-away-from-home”.

Children’s Center
Mariners Inn Addition

Detroit, Michigan

Dorchen/Martin Associates, Inc.
has had the opportunity to be involved with project in Detroit that are specialized in the care of abused men, women and children. Due to the present city economic and real estate conditions there are a number of unused buildings that have become a resource of structures for reuse and rehabilitation. The Children’s Center – specializing in the care and housing of homeless or abused children - is located in the Medical Center area in a renovated industrial building.

Mariners Inn is a new addition to an existing reused building and was constructed on the site of a demolished multi-story apartment house that had become an eyesore in the area. Mariners Inn provides temporary shelter and vocational guidance for adult males in need of such services.

COTS Adaptive Rehabilitation
Detroit, Michigan

COTS – Coalition on Temporary Shelter – provides temporary shelter and guidance for abused or homeless women and their children if such is the case. They presented us with a convent to renovate for their program. The 70-year old structure was a challenge but also a success in its final form.
