Dorchen/Martin Associates, Inc., in collaboration with Advantage Health Centers and St. John Health/Providence, developed this multi-disciplined health center for the Brightmoor District – a disadvantaged community in northwest Detroit.

Architectural challenges found on the existing site and within the structure provided creative opportunities for this dramatic building renovation from a former U.S. Post Office to the Thea Bowman Community Health Center.  Special attention to details at the new entrance and canopy, along with the colorful awnings, bring new life to this mature structure and the surrounding Brightmoor district.  The former post office customer service area has been transformed into a comfortable, attractive and efficient waiting area for clients.  Check-in, as well as access to treatment areas, community and reflection rooms radiate from the waiting area core.

The vision for the Thea Bowman Community Health Center and the results are dramatic and inspirational.   This monumental undertaking will serve as a vibrant example of redevelopment that answers to social needs.
