Oasis Charter School
Southfield, Michigan
This most unusual reuse of an existing building came about with the
creation of the charter school program in the State of Michigan.
Originally an elementary school three-quarters of a mile north of the
Detroit-Southfield border – the building was converted to a medical
testing laboratory facility in the mid 1970’s. The medical testing
company outgrew the building when the charter school program was a few
years into its development. The conversion was very interesting because
of the double reuse, the change in many applicable codes and the demand
for a speedy opening caused by the rapid enrollment growth.
