Thea Bowman Community Health
Center
Detroit, Michigan
Dorchen/Martin Associates, Inc.,
in collaboration with Advantage Health Centers and
St. John Health/Providence, developed this multi-disciplined health center
for the Brightmoor District – a disadvantaged community in northwest Detroit.
Architectural challenges found on the existing site and within the
structure provided creative opportunities for this dramatic building
renovation from a former U.S. Post Office to the Thea Bowman Community
Health Center. Special
attention to details at the new entrance and canopy, along with the
colorful awnings, bring new life to this mature structure and the
surrounding Brightmoor district. The
former post office customer service area has been transformed into a
comfortable, attractive and efficient waiting area for clients.
Check-in, as well as access to treatment areas, community and
reflection rooms radiate from the waiting area core.
The vision for the Thea Bowman Community Health Center and the
results are dramatic and inspirational.
This monumental undertaking will serve as a vibrant example of
redevelopment that answers to social needs.

 Crittenton
Physical Therapy
Crittenton Medical
Plaza
Auburn
Hills, Michigan
Located in an offsite medical office building, this full-service physical
therapy facility presented several design challenges.
The greatest of which was incorporating a hydro-therapy pool within
the constraints of the existing building.
Existing elements such as columns, footing and mechanical rooms
posed limitations on both the pool location and size.
In addition, the facility needed to be organized to provide
therapists views from space to space.
The result was a plan that provided open, flexible therapy spaces,
a user and staff friendly hydrotherapy room along with workspaces that
provide privacy and visibility.

Specialized Women’s Healthcare
William H. Michaels, M.D.
Bloomfield Township, Michigan
Anxiety and fear often times accompany patients to their medical
appointments. Minimizing these fears can be beneficial to both the patient
and the physician. In an effort to calm patient emotional levels through
the creation of a comfortable physical environment, sensitive
architectural and interior design decisions played a major role in this
newly designed and constructed medical suite.
In addition to the efficient patient traffic flow, the traditional
décor and finishes selected by the doctor and interior designer creates a
total environment that is extremely refreshing and comforting for any
visitor.

Tri-County Medical Offices
Sterling Heights, Michigan
Designed to be occupied by four doctors, this 7,100 sf medical office
building houses all of its required medical services under one roof
including a laboratory and x-ray suite. In order to take full advantage of
the available space, there is also a fire-protected dead file storage area
tucked into the site.
The building was designed to serve both patients and employees equally
well. For example, while patients enter through the colorful main
entrance, there is also a separate private entrance, surrounded by a
garden wall, for doctors and employees to use. Dorchen/Martin Associates,
Inc. feels that all aspects of patient care as well as business
management, have been successfully addressed and unified in this design
solution.

Gable Dental
Midland, Michigan
Kay Gable, D.D.S. asked D/MA for a one story building
to house her growing dental practice and to provide additional lease space
for income purposes. Her desire to have a building style relating to the
rural ambience of its locale was satisfied with our use of a covered,
colonnaded, front porch, hip roof with gable accents and wide roof
overhangs.
The interior spaces include a modern waiting and
business area and open entries to the treatment rooms. Two exits are
provided from the partial basement which fulfills the need for file and
supply storage as well as for tenant use.

Radiology Clinic
Farmington Hills, Michigan
Designed as the third building in a colonial style office complex, this
structure houses a multi-specialist radiation diagnostic practice.
In order to conserve space on a small and costly site, all long-term
storage was located in the attic. Additionally, the efficiency of the plan
allows for future expansion as well as providing lease space for present
usage.
